Well, how is your post-lockdown pub experience going? If you haven’t ventured out yet, that’s completely understandable. However, many pubs are providing excellent facilities for your safe drinking. Social distancing is in place, along with track & trace facilities at all our pubs. Yes, it can be frustrating that there isn’t one single method available, but each pub has their own system in place – please find out what it is on entry, the staff will be more than willing to help and if we all contribute, then together we can minimise the effect of an outbreak locally. Fingers crossed. Many pubs have outside areas that may very well be “hidden” – go and find them and remember, if you feel uncomfortable in a particular pub, we’re so lucky to have so many to chose from. Perhaps an ideal time to explore a pub you haven’t visited for a while? For those that did venture out, I trust you took advantage of the EatOutToHelpOut scheme? Perhaps now that’s finished the Government might introduce a scheme to help wet-led pubs that have, and are being, affected by the whole Covid experience, owners’ rates demands and supermarket offers. #DrinkOutToHelpOut anyone? Seriously, our pubs need help now more than ever! PUB NEWS – LOTS OF IT! The Manor Due to re-open September 11th – this is fantastic news for one of Otley’s most favourite pubs. Looking for part time staff evening and weekends. Rose & Crown Great news! Back open under new management. A very big welcome and good luck to Connor and the team. For opening times see below. Let’s hope this stalwart of the Otley pub scene goes from strength to strength. Otley Tap House More great news! The Burger Co van has relocated, and can be found in the yard at the back of the Taps. Old Cock The great news keeps on coming. Back open with outside seating! Looks great – let’s hope the weather improves a little so that the new seating outfront (and to the side) can be enjoyed. Inside has been reconfigured with perspex screens upstairs and down. Whitakers Even more great news. Opening Monday 7th September at 12:00 noon. The interior looks fantastic and the “hidden” garden has been restored back to it’s beautiful setting for a quiet, away from the hustle and bustle sanctuary! Menu available for fresh home-cooked food. Sunday lunches. Happy hours in place 4pm-7pm Monday to Friday. I’m sure all our members will join the Committee in wishing Monica and Andy all the very best and good luck. Welcome!! The Summercross Remember this? The pub not the band 😉 Well, you may have seen that having been in the hands of developers for many years, it’s finally been put up “For Sale” – unfortunately not one of Asset of Community Value (ACV) pubs (that’s the main reason OPC was established in the first place!), so we are in the lap of the Gods. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone took it on and re-established this fantastic pub. Imagine the catchment area when the housing development gets underway to the east of the town. Business from the trades-people during development and then a whole new customer base on their doorstep. Anyone got a rich Aunt or Uncle? Perhaps a revival of SOS? #SaveOurSummercross Horse & Farrier Currently closed by Market Town Taverns. We have no news yet unfortunately. The rumour mill is beginning to turn it’s wheel and we will bring you the official news as and when we get it. Let’s hope this lovely venue comes back to us soon. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOUR PUB NEWS HERE AND POSTED TO OUR 600+ MEMBERS MONTHLY, JUST LET US KNOW! email: info@otleypubclub.co.uk POSSIBLE THREAT TO SMALL BUSINESS BREWERS Local and small brewers are potentially under threat as the Government looks set to increase tax paid by some small independent breweries. You could help to protect local breweries, the beers they make and your choice at the bar by signing the petition urging the UK Government not to remove tax relief from the smallest brewers to allow larger brewers to pay less. There’s an interesting discussion on the topic between Nomadic Brewery boss and Timothy Taylors here. The two letters referenced in the article are also useful in understanding the issue and if you wish you can add your name to the petition on the UK Parliament website here.
