Welcome to the December edition of the Otley Pub Club newsletter. And a special welcome to our new subscribers.
We all know that the economic situation is affecting businesses of all sorts, as well as domestic users. With this in mind, it’s understandable that some of our bars and pubs are adjusting their opening hours accordingly. More details as we get them of course. We will try to keep our website up to date, but it’s a very fluid situation so please bear with us and our hard-pressed publicans. Perhaps, check out with the venue to confirm opening times?
It was magnificent to see the Victorian Fayre back in full swing. Great to see the crowds on the streets supporting both local businesses and stall holders. Well done to all involved in getting the Fayre back on and long may it continue in Otley’s calendar of events!
Of course, with Victorian Fayre comes Otley Pub Club’s very own Victorian Alehouse competition for the outstanding Elise Brumfitt trophy ( you can read more about Elise and why she is commemorated with our trophy here: http://www.otleypubclub.co.uk/elise-brumfitt-remembered )
A few words from our Secretary:
“The past three years have been difficult for the whole service sector, and Otley Pub Club want to thank all those who still took part in adding to the overall atmosphere on Victorian Fayre Day. For the first time, they couldn’t decide between the top two contenders, so they awarded the Elise Brumfitt Trophy [named after the club’s first historian and researcher] jointly to The Black Bull and The Old Cock. All the staff in both pubs were dressed in appropriate period outfits, and provided a warm and welcoming service to all their customers on the day. The trophy will be engraved with the name of both pubs, and will be on display behind the bar for six months each.
“A special award for most original costume was also made to Matthew, the landlord at The Red Lion, whose Victorian bathing suit was the talk of the town! He even braved the cold weather to show off his creation by walking round town for a while, so congratulations (or commiserations?) if you were lucky enough to see him!”
Now to see the photographic evidence of the event (incl. the swimsuit!) Check out our website:
http://www.otleypubclub.co.uk/otley-victorian-alehouse-competition-2022
Thanks to all the pubs/bars and staff that took part – hopefully many more next year will participate. And also thanks to the OPC Committee members who made this possible – you know who you are! Cheers!
On the eve of the Fayre, Otley Pub Club in conjunction with Otley Pub Walkers, held a Lost Pubs of Otley Walking Tour with a Victorian theme with many attendees trying out their costumes for the following day! Although not blessed by the best weather, a great turnout (the event was full!) were enthralled by the musings of OPC’s Andy Fitzgerald and our thanks go out to him for his time researching and delivering a great evening! We promise another Lost Pubs walk in hopefully warmer weather! You can check out a full list of Otley’s Lost Pubs and brief histories here:

Manor House
OK, so we know that The Manor House pub has been put up for sale by owners Thwaites. It’s unfortunate that, for insurance purposes, Thwaites have had to put up steel shutters over the windows and doors making it look unsightly and not very attractive to the any potential buyers. But unavoidable I guess.
Remember the project has 2 key objectives:
- To save The Manor House as a truly historic pub
- To create a unique Community Pub in our famous pub town
Please email: otleycommunitypub@gmail for further information or to offer support/funding.

But here’s a recurring plea to all the landlords in town – please drop us a line to info@otleypubclub.co.uk if there’s something you want us to put in the newsletter! Although we try to share all your social media posts, we don’t sit reading Facebook and Twitter all day every day and scanning them all every month when we’re producing the news for our 700 readers takes hours. Worse than that, some of the media – even on websites – might be out of date, but we have no real way of knowing, so we might be giving out completely wrong information!
Also please note that the offers and prices are correct to the best of our knowledge. Please check with the venue whilst ordering. OPC cannot be responsible for any discrepancies.
AND FINALLY….
PUB OF THE MONTH this month is The Yew Tree
Our intrepid Pub Whisperer has been out and about again and this time ventured north of the river! I checked his passport as he crossed the bridge so he’s ok to go!
Some of our Otley readers might think it’s a bit of a walk to get to The Yew Tree – over the river, then a bit of a steep climb up Billams Hill till you’re opposite Prince Henry’s. But it’s definitely worth it, and of course for hundreds of people this is their local – vying with the Social Club and The Roebuck (even more of a climb!) for customers on the North side of town.
Julia Ward has been in charge of the place for 5 years now, but that really doesn’t tell the whole story as she’s actually been working there since she was 18. (No, of course I didn’t ask. I’m too much of a gentleman for that!) Although her time in charge has obviously included the worst of times for the pub industry, with the last 3 years affected by Covid and a cost of living crisis, there has been no knee-jerk reaction at The Yew Tree to increase the prices.
Every Thursday between midday and 2pm, ‘seniors’ can get a dinner for £3:99, followed by an equally ridiculously cheap dessert PLUS hot and cold drinks offers! (They never mentioned a specific lower age limit to me with my bus pass and all, but I guess you know if you’re senior enough to go and give it a try!) Every Sunday from midday to 4:30pm you can get their famous carvery, which has been rated among the best in Leeds, for just £9:99 – and it doesn’t stop there! You can also pick up a doggy carvery for your favourite 4-legged friend for just £1:50!
In the run-up to Christmas a log burner is being installed in the tap room; there are still 3 Christmas party nights on the 9th, 16th and 23rd (if they’re not sold out already!); and there’s a Christmas market in the car parks on Saturday the 10th from 1pm to 5pm.
There’s a pool table in the tap room, and the lounge can be hired free of charge for functions.
If you have friends or family with a motorhome, they can even park there overnight for nothing if they come to see you.
So you see there are plenty of reasons to visit The Yew Tree that make it worth that short climb up the hill. The website calls The Yew Tree “Your friendly community local”, and it certainly is that – they even welcome visitors from South of the river as well!
To view a brief history of the Yew Tree, please visit our Facebook page:

A massive THANK YOU!!! Otley Pub Club’s JustGiving campaign was launched in July and we are delighted by the donations we’ve received so far – from far and wide!! Remember, our only source of income previously has been our Premier Membership card, which offered discounts at local pubs and bars. We decided post-Covid that this was not in the best interest of our hard-working publicans to beg them for money off when finances were tight. Even more so now in the economic crisis we all face. So we have temporarily suspended the Card scheme.
All of the contributions have provided valuable funds (primarily to pay off long standing debt) for us as we continue our aim of promoting and protecting Otley’s great pubs and bringing in much needed revenue to all businesses in the town generally. BUT, we haven’t closed the appeal. More funds would allow us to do more promotions.
We understand times are hard, but just the price of small round of drinks would help us tremendously. Every little helps. Thank you in advance.

Otley Pub Club meet up in a different pub in Otley on the first Thursday of every month to discuss anything and everything happening in Otley and in it’s pubs, and everybody is welcome to join us. We start at about 7pm to discuss any semi-formal stuff, then finish with that at 8pm and spend the rest of the evening chatting about whatever comes up. We’ll usually visit 3 pubs during the evening.
So, if you fancy perhaps seeing the inside of a pub that you’ve never been in; or you’ve got a burning issue about Otley’s pubs that you’ve been dying to share; or maybe if you just fancy a drink and a chat and all your mates are doing something else; check out the times on our Facebook event page for our next meeting and you can join us at any time in any of the pubs along the way.
We’ll be in these pubs and at least one of us will be wearing something black with an obvious Otley Pub Club logo on it so we’re recognisable!
Next Pub Club Social: Thursday 5th January 2023. Venues and times will be posted on our Social Media nearer the time. Watch out for the Facebook event
Well folks, that’s it for this month. All of us here at OPC wish all of our Subscribers, families and friends a very happy, safe and healthy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
Please remember, if you want to get in touch email to info@otleypubclub.co.uk, or why not come along to one of our monthly socials…
Cheers for now. See you all out and about in our #FamousPubTown
