Welcome to the November edition of the Otley Pub Club newsletter. And a special welcome to our new subscribers.
As the bonfire ashes subside and damp squibs have all been extinguished, I reckon we’re full tilt on towards the dreaded (or lovely?) C word?
It’s nice to see the lights going up I must admit. Hopefully, lots of Otley businesses will take up the Christmas Tree offer and contribute to a lovely town atmosphere. Lights switch on in the Market Square on Monday 28th Nov from 5.30pm (lights at 7pm). Expect (more) fireworks, bands & choir, fairground rides, street theatre, Ronnie the Rhino, and Santa plus much more – should be a great evening.
We all know that the economic situation is affecting businesses of all sorts, as well as domestic users. With this in mind, it’s understandable that some of our bars and pubs are adjusting their opening hours accordingly. More details as we get them of course. We will try to keep our website up to date, but it’s a very fluid situation so please bear with us and our hard-pressed publicans. Perhaps, check out with the venue to confirm opening times?
Look out for news on the Manor House. A community bid is assembled. See more details below, and why not get involved?
Someone on Facebook the other day complaining Otley was dead in the evenings. And it got me thinking about all that’s going on with Quizzes, Karaoke, Meals, Bingo etc. etc. and of course Live Music, which can be found at (in no particular order!) – Junction, Rose&Crown, Otley Taps, White Swan, Whitakers, Black Horse, Bay Horse, Rookery, Horse&Farrier to name a few, plus ad hoc events at other pubs and bars. Dead town? I don’t think so!
Town mayor Linda Hoare is hosting an event this month to raise money for her three chosen charities for the year: Open Country, Otley & District Talking Newspaper and Dystonia UK. The event is a special gig featuring local bands Fauns and Graffiti. Held at the Black Horse on Friday November 18th, tickets cost 8/£5 concs from Otley Core (Unit 11, Orchard Gate) and the Black Horse.
Otley Beer Festival 2022
With much sadness we can confirm that the much-loved Otley Beer Festival will now no longer take place in 2022. Despite some herculean efforts, circumstances have contrived to make it impossible to get this year’s event up and running. But fear not, OBF 2023 is already in the planning stages.
A message from OBF Chairman, Ian Bearpark:
“Unfortunately, the Otley Beer Festival organising committee has decided it is not possible to arrange a festival this year (2022) and is putting its efforts into preparing for a venue-based festival in 2023.
Since 2002 the festival has been under the umbrella of Otley Parish Church and covered by their various procedures and insurances but following the amicable separation at the beginning of this year, it has not been possible to set up our own systems in time for this year’s festival.
We look forward to reviving this enjoyable and important charity fund-raising
event which has become one of Otley’s main community events next year.”

Otley Victorian Christmas Fayre 2022
But on the brighter side – The 35th Victorian Fayre returns on Sunday 4th December 2022 – Midday to 6pm. Always a great day for the town. Be sure to put the date in your diary! Programme of events and road layout available round town and on the Victorian Fayre website for download.
A message from the OVCF Facebook team:
“I can now confirm that there will be a parade around the Fayre at approximately 4.15pm. At the head will be some of the band members of Leeds Pipe Band, followed by Wayzgoose and the White Rose Yorkshire Steam Punks in all their amazing costumes.”
You can follow the build-up on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/otleyvictorianchristmasfayre
Website: https://www.victorianfayre.co.uk/
This year will again include the Otley Pub Club Victorian Alehouse competition where we will be inviting our local hostelries to dress in Victorian costume to compete for the magnificent Elise Brumfitt Trophy. Past years have really seen our pubs get into the spirit of the day and the competition (we have photographic evidence!) – hopefully we can get a good number involved again in providing entertainment, seasonal food, mulled wine/cider, mince pies etc – we will be in touch to see who’s in!
PUB NEWS
Cross Pipes
Otley’s latest Freehold pub is currently undergoing refurbishment. Watch this space for more news on potential opening date
Manor House
OK, so we know that The Manor House pub has been put up for sale by owners Thwaites. It’s unfortunate that, for insurance purposes, Thwaites have had to put up steel shutters over the windows and doors making it look unsightly and not very attractive to the any potential buyers. But unavoidable I guess.
Remember the project has 2 key objectives:
- To save The Manor House as a truly historic pub
- To create a unique Community Pub in our famous pub town
URGENT UPDATE!
There is to be an Open Public Meeting this Weds 9th Nov at 7.45pm upstairs at The Rookery on Kirkgate. And all the best of luck for whatever venture you take on next.
And with that, a very warm welcome to Emma Newbould and her partner Rob, who are taking over the mantle of managing this iconic Otley pub. May you go from strength to strength. Good luck for the future.

But here’s a recurring plea to all the landlords in town – please drop us a line to info@otleypubclub.co.uk if there’s something you want us to put in the newsletter! Although we try to share all your social media posts, we don’t sit reading Facebook and Twitter all day every day and scanning them all every month when we’re producing the news for our 700 readers takes hours. Worse than that, some of the media – even on websites – might be out of date, but we have no real way of knowing, so we might be giving out completely wrong information!
Also please note that the offers and prices are correct to the best of our knowledge. Please check with the venue whilst ordering. OPC cannot be responsible for any discrepancies.
AND FINALLY….
PUB OF THE MONTH this month is The Fleece
The Fleece is a just a bit different from your average Otley town centre pub. For a start it’s not in the town centre – although it’s only a gentle 10 minute stroll out west to get there. Then when you do arrive it looks more like a standalone roadside inn, which is appropriate when you remember that inns were known for providing food as well as drinks to weary travellers. The Fleece sits proudly in the number 1 spot on TripAdvisor for all restaurants in Otley, and 53 in the whole of West Yorkshire thanks to the hard work and dedication of landlords Geoff and Sarah.
The couple moved into The Fleece early in 2018 and set about making it a pub that was based firmly around its food offering. Of course, we all know what happened just 2 years later, when the first round of Covid restrictions really made the pub trade suffer. The Fleece was one of the pubs locally that was giving beer away rather than pouring it down the drain when they weren’t allowed to open, which was great for us – but not so much for landlords and brewers! Strangely though, Sarah said that the post-lockdown restrictions helped them to manage the pub more like a restaurant, as customers had got used to waiting at the entrance to be allocated a table, where they would then be served.
Now here comes the rub! Geoff and Sarah have decided they want a rest from the constant grind of running a pub. As Sarah said, they’ll be able to see each other again, rather than one working in the kitchen every day and the other in the pub! They’re going to have a well-earned 6 month break from work before deciding what their next challenge will be, and their final day open to the public was Wednesday October 26th. So where does that leave The Fleece?
Well, you’ll be glad to know that despite pubs up and down the country closing their doors permanently every single week, The Fleece is still going strong. It only stopped serving for a week, and new publicans Rob and Emma took on the mantle of running it – opening the doors again on Thursday November 3rd. One of the reasons the handover was so smooth was that they had actually been working at the pub for the previous 8 months, after leaving premises in Burley in Wharfedale. Rob in the kitchen and Emma in front of house. So, they’re familiar with what their existing customers like, but will also want to put their own stamp on the food and drink on offer.
Rob said the food menu would continue to be based on good quality traditional pub classics as it had been previously, but with perhaps a few changes on the daily menu and for Sunday dinners. [You can find the new menu in the posts on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TheFleeceOtley/ and the new website will be launched soon at https://www.thefleeceotley.co.uk/index
They’ll continue to have a range of real ales as well as all the other lagers and ciders on offer, but Rob wants to see the place reverting more to its pre-Covid days as a pub with a good food offer, rather than a restaurant that sells good beer! Dogs will still be welcome with drinkers in the snug, and there’ll be a special ‘dining with dogs’ area in the separate room to the right as you go in the front door.
And finally, there’s The Fleece’s unique selling point – the garden stretching down to the river. Rob wants to make that whole outside space more of a ‘standalone’ area, but I guess he and Emma have enough on their hands just taking over the whole business, so watch out for more developments next year. In the meantime, if you haven’t taken that 10-minute walk up Westgate for a while, or you didn’t feel you could just call in for a drink with your mates as it felt like a restaurant, why not give the Fleece a try sometime. (It’s got a blazing fire for when the cold sets in too!)
A massive THANK YOU!!! Otley Pub Club’s JustGiving campaign was launched in July and we are delighted by the donations we’ve received so far – from far and wide!! Remember, our only source of income previously has been our Premier Membership card, which offered discounts at local pubs and bars. We decided post-Covid that this was not in the best interest of our hard-working publicans to beg them for money off when finances were tight. Even more so now in the economic crisis we all face. So we have temporarily suspended the Card scheme.
All of the contributions have provided valuable funds (primarily to pay off long standing debt) for us as we continue our aim of promoting and protecting Otley’s great pubs and bringing in much needed revenue to all businesses in the town generally. BUT, we haven’t closed the appeal. More funds would allow us to do more promotions.
We understand times are hard, but just the price of small round of drinks would help us tremendously. Every little helps. Thank you in advance.

Otley Pub Club meet up in a different pub in Otley on the first Thursday of every month to discuss anything and everything happening in Otley and in it’s pubs, and everybody is welcome to join us. We start at about 7pm to discuss any semi-formal stuff, then finish with that at 8pm and spend the rest of the evening chatting about whatever comes up. We’ll usually visit 3 pubs during the evening
So, if you fancy perhaps seeing the inside of a pub that you’ve never been in; or you’ve got a burning issue about Otley’s pubs that you’ve been dying to share; or maybe if you just fancy a drink and a chat and all your mates are doing something else; check out the times on our Facebook event page for our next meeting and you can join us at any time in any of the pubs along the way.
We’ll be in these pubs and at least one of us will be wearing something black with an obvious Otley Pub Club logo on it so we’re recognisable!
Next Pub Club Social: Thursday 1st December 2022. Venues and times will be posted on our Social Media nearer the time. Watch out for the Facebook event.
Well folks, that’s it for this month. Please remember, if you want to get in touch email to info@otleypubclub.co.uk, or why not come along to one of our monthly socials.
Cheers for now. See you all out and about in our #FamousPubTown
