Welcome to the July edition of the Otley Pub Club newsletter. And a special welcome to our new subscribers. We’re a little later than usual but we’ve been very busy. With what you ask? See below.
Our Yorkshire Day Event for 2023 is in full swing. Entries for the Pub Photo Competition are now closed, and judging will take place soon. THANK YOU TO ALL THAT ENTERED! The event will comprise an exhibition of pub photos beginning August 1st (Yorkshire Day of course!) in the Stables Yard at the Black Horse Hotel and run for 5 days. Please get yourselves along and have a look – there are some beauties, as well as some beasts. As well as the physical photos on display, there will be a slideshow running on the mahoosive screen with photos of Otley pubs – some new, some old and some very old, including many characters from around the Otley pub scene over the years – see who you can spot – you may spot yourself! We would like to extend our warmest thanks to the team at Otley Camera Club and Otley Museum for making this possible. The winners will be announced on August 1st at the Black Horse at a time to be decided – watch out for our Social Medias about that.
Well, what an amazingly busy month it’s been. Some fantastic events last month.
The Otley Walking Festival was one of the busiest and best ever. Walks for all ages and abilities around the area. The effort put in by the organisers and guides is outstanding – well done to all. Looking forward to next year already
The town centre Cycle Racing was another hugely busy night for the town. OK, a slight inconvenience for a couple of hours due to the road closures, but what an advert for the town. Hopefully, our local businesses did well!
The Carnival was a tremendous success, despite a small rain shower during the parade. Congratulations to all the Committee, Volunteers and Participants for keeping this iconic Otley event running.
The 2 live music events in town, Otley Music Fest and Otley Live, although not blessed by the best weather for the outside events, were fantastic. The standard of performances around town was superb and brought many visitors in. Again, massive congratulations to all the organisers and performers for making Otley a #FamousMusicTown!
There is some bad news regarding the Cross Pipes closure – more info below under Pub News.
As above, we all know that the economic situation is affecting businesses of all sorts, as well as domestic users. With this in mind, it’s understandable that some of our bars and pubs are adjusting their opening hours accordingly. More details as we get them of course. We will try to keep our website up to date, but it’s a very fluid situation so please bear with us and our hard-pressed publicans. Perhaps, check out with the venue to confirm opening times?
And of course, a call out to all publicans, if you do change hours/days of opening, please let us know via info@otleypubclub.co.uk and we’ll endeavour to get the word out there.
We’ve got the usual categories this month of Otley Events, Pub News, Pub Events and our “And Finally” piece sees the return of Pub of the Month.
Here we go….

OTLEY BEER FESTIVAL returns for 2023!
Last week the Otley Beer Festival committee approved the arrangements to go ahead in partnership with the rugby club for 2023. They told us:
“We are delighted to announce that the Otley Beer Festival will be returning on the 17/18th November in partnership with Otley Rugby Club. Details are being worked on and more news will follow as arrangements are finalised, please check the website www.otleybeerfestival.co.uk for updates“

PUB NEWS
Cross Pipes
Lots happening. Due to the pub going into administration and the receivers take over the property. It’s up for Sale – by the way, information for the Selling Agents, it is not a “Former Pub” – it’s a pub that is temporarily closed! A cash offer was made by a local group for the full asking price. Their aim was to completely refurbish the pub inside and out. Plus, re-establish the much-needed B&B rooms! They are fully aware of what’s needed and have the funds and personnel to carry out the work immediately. All good news, right? Well, not unless you are greedy and want more money – more than the asking price. Which is exactly what is happening. It appears the seller is now offering the property to the highest bidder, which will encourage non-pub developers – apartments, houses, retail outlet, restaurant who knows?
We, along with other interest groups have called on the Seller to “Do the right thing” and keep this valuable community asset alive – AS A PUB!
You can read more about this, plus our letter to the Sellers pleading with them to keep it as a pub, here:
http://www.otleypubclub.co.uk/news-and-events/the-sale-of-the-cross-pipes
Manor House
IMPORTANT! All very quiet from sellers Thwaites as to the state of play. We understand that their selling price is deterring potential buyers (of which there were a few) due to the cost of repairs needed.
After the recent meeting of the Community Bid group, the Bid is back under way as they waited for potential buyers who have since gone. Expect more news soon with setting up of the Community Bid website and the start of a fundraising programme.
As we said, the Community Bid Team is still in place and the project has 2 key objectives:
- To save The Manor House as a truly historic pub
- To create a unique Community Pub in our famous pub town
The group’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/809850323595408
Or, you can follow the Community Pub Group on Twitter: @otleycommpub
More public meetings are planned as the fund raising gets underway. Keep an eye on the Community Pub social media sites and if you want news, get in touch or provide support, all are welcome. Contacts above.
Summercross
It appears that the last planning application has been withdrawn. We are not at all surprised by this. The poor quality application was full of holes and discrepancies. Watch this space for more news!
Otley Tavern
You may have noticed that a sign has gone up at the Tav. Either Freehold or Leasehold is on offer – free of any brewery tie. Now closed unfortunately.
Horse & Farrier
Again, Freehold or Leasehold up for sale. But again, still open and trading with some fantastic live music events.
Freehold, Leasehold, Free of Tie – what does it all mean?
We’ve covered these items before but in summary:
Freehold = you buy the building. Like when you buy your house
Leasehold = the building owner rents you the building for an annual fee. The details of the lease can vary tremendously
Free-of-Tie = You are not bound to take stock from a particular supplier, brewery, pubco etc.

Although we try to share all your social media posts, we don’t sit reading Facebook and Twitter all day every day and scanning them all every month when we’re producing the news for our 700 readers takes hours. Worse than that, some of the media – even on websites – might be out of date, but we have no real way of knowing, so we might be giving out completely wrong information!
Also please note that the offers and prices are correct to the best of our knowledge. Please check with the venue whilst ordering. OPC cannot be responsible for any discrepancies.
AND FINALLY
PUB OF THE MONTH – SHADOW BREWING
Monday the 17th of July is the second anniversary of the opening of Shadow Brewing’s micro-brewery taproom to the public. Since then, the brewer, landlord and sole member of staff Ian Shutt has made the place quite an important addition to the local community. It might only be open Friday and Saturday nights (and some Sundays), but it is available for community use 7 days and nights a week. And it is one of the few pubs or bars in Otley with level wheelchair access and a fully accessible toilet.
For a start there’s a live music night once a month on a Sunday. Not always the same Sunday every month, but so far it has managed NOT to clash with the board games night, which generally takes place on the first Sunday every month! Three local musicians who call themselves ‘We Three Things’ will usually open the event, and then introduce the guest artiste(s) they have invited for that night. The quality of the music is excellent, and well worth a visit. Details of the programme up to December are on the Shadow Brewing Facebook page.
As well as the board games night, there are also three different book clubs that meet there once a month. On the last Wednesday of every month there’s a women only night, and there’s a weekly group for men called MINT – Men In Need Together – for those who want someone to talk to. With all that going on, and with Ian being the only member of staff (AND having a full-time job!), you might wonder how he manages. Help from family and friends is the answer! Ian usually sets up the evening, then someone else will look after the bar – if it’s needed. He’s always there for the music nights though, and you’ll see him behind the bar every Friday and Saturday.
If you’ve never been to the taproom, and you’re wondering where it is, it’s on Boroughgate facing the Maypole, just beyond The Otley Tap House and The White Swan as you head out of the town centre. Even then it’s only 3 minutes’ walk from the Market Square! Ian will be happy to welcome you. As he said, he already has “a lovely group of customers” who visit on a regular basis, and he says that many of them are new Otley residents. Maybe they’re from the East end of town as well, as Shadow is the first pub on the way in, now The Manor House is closed.
Ian has no plans at the moment to open for more than 2 nights a week, but is still thoroughly enjoying the hard work after 2 years. “When it stops being fun, I’ll stop!” he said. But with Central Lancs CAMRA coming to visit on July 29th; the Otliensians hockey team visiting as well – Ian sponsors their sleeves; Otley singles heading their way soon; and Otley Sailing Club and Otley 2030 amongst previous visitors; it doesn’t look as though his customers want him to close any time soon.
A massive THANK YOU!!! Otley Pub Club’s JustGiving campaign was launched in July and we are delighted by the donations we’ve received so far – from far and wide!! Remember, our only source of income previously has been our Premier Membership card, which offered discounts at local pubs and bars. We decided post-Covid that this was not in the best interest of our hard-working publicans to beg them for money off when finances were tight. Even more so now in the economic crisis we all face. So we have temporarily suspended the Card scheme.
All of the contributions have provided valuable funds (primarily to pay off long standing debt) for us as we continue our aim of promoting and protecting Otley’s great pubs and bringing in much needed revenue to all businesses in the town generally. BUT, we haven’t closed the appeal. More funds would allow us to do more promotions.
We understand times are hard, but just the price of small round of drinks would help us tremendously. Every little helps. Thank you in advance.

Otley Pub Club meet up in a different pub in Otley on the first Thursday of every month to discuss anything and everything happening in Otley and in its pubs, and everybody is welcome to join us. We start at about 7pm to discuss any semi-formal stuff, then finish with that at 8pm and spend the rest of the evening chatting about whatever comes up. We’ll usually visit 3 pubs during the evening.
So, if you fancy perhaps seeing the inside of a pub that you’ve never been in; or you’ve got a burning issue about Otley’s pubs that you’ve been dying to share; or maybe if you just fancy a drink and a chat and all your mates are doing something else; check out the times on our Facebook event page for our next meeting and you can join us at any time in any of the pubs along the way.
We’ll be in these pubs and at least one of us will be wearing something black with an obvious Otley Pub Club logo on it so we’re recognisable!
Next Pub Club Social: Thursday 3rd August 2023. Venues and times will be posted on our Social Media nearer the time. Watch out for the Facebook event.
Well folks, that’s it for this month. Please remember, if you want to get in touch email to info@otleypubclub.co.uk, or why not come along to one of our monthly socials…
Cheers for now. See you all out and about in our #FamousPubTown
