It’s Back…And this time it’s Quizical!
The 2024 Haunted Halloween Fancy Dress Hike – Feel the fear, and do it anyway.
This event is presented by the Otley Pub Club in association with the Otley Pub Walkers group. This year’s event will include a Halloween Themed Quiz (£2 entry fee, proceeds as prize money!). A fun social celebration of 4 of Otley’s fine collection of pubs – similar to our other previous fancy dress strolls. We look forward to you joining us again (or for the first time!).
The event will begin at 17:00 on Sunday 27th October 2024 at Whitakers, Kirkgate, Otley for drinks, introductions, and health & safety announcements. This event may (or may not) include thrills and scares, and therefore must be undertaken by those old enough to accept any/all risks as their own liability. Note: should unquiet or malign spirits be encountered you are own your own. The organisers accept no responsibility for your safety.
Risk Assessment
The usual risks associated with walking, talking, and use of alcohol apply. However, the proximity to the Day of the Dead may provide additional unknown risks. These may include, but are not limited to: known knowns, risks we know that we know; known unknowns, risks that we know we don’t know, as well as unknown unknowns, risks we do not know we don’t know. Accordingly, the organisers have no way to calculate the degree of risk involved and have no control over the doings of the undead (or other forces). You are advised that you undertake this at your own peril. You should however read the sections below “On Fleeing” and “PPE”.
On Fleeing
Should an unquiet, malign or otherwise supernatural force (or spirit) be encountered you are advised to flee. The organisers recommend fleeing in an “away” direction. You may wish to avoid fleeing further into the building, moving to any floor above or below ground level is not advisable. Cellars and attics should be avoided. See “PPE” for notes on footwear and sharp objects.
Panic while fleeing is advised against but it is recognised that screaming, while optional, may be undertaken. It is noted that a number of sections of the route will involve crossing or using roads and the Green Cross Code or Tufty Club protocols (see Health & Safety video below) should be observed at all times including while fleeing.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
There is no formal requirement for PPE, however you may want to to consider the notes provided below.
Apparel: The use of apparel to “blend in” should unquiet/malign spirits be encountered is advised. A disguise such as a ghoul, ghost or goblin may provide camouflage and the extra time needed to undertake effective fleeing (see: On Fleeing).
Footwear: It is advised that the selection of footwear should be made in the full knowledge that fleeing may be required.
Specialist Equipment: It is noted that risks associated with encounters with the undead may be mitigated through the deployment of garlic and/or holy water. The organisers do not require participants to carry either. Should an individual choose to carry holy water it is noted that Catholic holy water has a long provenance. It is further noted that it is unlikely that any undead, unquiet or malign apparition or manifestation would be responsive to the deployment of holy water and it may be that a damp spirit/ apparition may simply become further enraged. The organisers do ask that no sharpened sticks (stakes) are carried by any participant as they may provide risk to self or others during any fleeing activity.
Final Note: in the face of supernatural danger you are own your own. We advise fleeing.
