We hope you had a great September – and enjoyed the good weather we had in early/mid September (remember that!), Otley Folk Festival, Otley International Town Criers competition and the UCI World Cycling Championships and Otley’s #PubNations!
Well done to all the pubs and bars (and shop and cafe!) that took part, there were some great efforts in adopting your home nation. A big thanks to Bob Brook who has worked his socks off for months organising this, contacting embassies and consulates and ordering and putting up banners and flags!
Good news – the historic Bay Horse is re-opening on Saturday 12th October. Husband-and-wife team Dean and Jan Ball have taken on the pub – after they saw it was available while stuck in traffic as they passed through the Yorkshire market town!
It has been given a facelift by owners Hawthorn Leisure, who has spent £40,000 to refurbish the venue, including on bringing the gent’s toilets inside (which has needed doing for some time!) while Dean and Jan have invested £10,000 of their own to redecorate the interior and lay new flooring. The Bay Horse has reverted to a traditional colour scheme, and now features new lighting and signage and two ‘Joshua Tetley’ lamps that adorn the front and rear of the building have been renovated.
Dean, who with Jan ran The Fox & Hounds, in Langthorpe, near Harrogate, for four-and-a-half-years, said: “We both fancied a change, and happened to see that The Bay Horse was available while stuck in traffic passing through Otley, one day. It must have been fate, because it was the very pub at which we used to regularly meet friends, around six-years-ago.
“The pub had been closed for some time, and needed to be updated and refurbished, but now it’s had a facelift and has been brightened-up, we’re really looking forward to welcoming regulars back to the pub, attracting new customers, and making it somewhere that tourists want to visit.”
So we look forward to the 12th and to welcoming Dean and Jan and hope you will support them!

Star/Heineken – The White Swan and Junction
We are concerned about both the Swan and the Junction.
At the White Swan, we had hoped that Star would have agreed a sensible deal with Chris by now, but despite what Star told us a couple of months ago, this hasn’t happened so will be expressing our concern to Star about this after the reassurances we were given by Star about what they would do with the pub.
We’ve been told that Rob and Faye are leaving the Junction and the pub is up for lease. We are concerned that Star keep the Junction as a famous alehouse and don’t try to turn into an identikit chain pub, which would ruin it, so we will be raising this with them.
Other Pub News
We’re still waiting to hear when The Tap House will re-open after its refurbishment, we’ll keep you posted.
We welcome Steve to Whitaker’s and hope that you will support him and the team there.
