Welcome to the April edition of the Otley Pub Club newsletter. And a special welcome to our new subscribers. It’s supposed to be Spring, but not seen much sign of it yet except for the Cross going up on t’Chevin. Hopefully you enjoyed a relaxed Easter weekend? And a busy weekend for our local businesses and some good weather too! Great to see the boats back on the river – wonderful!
In March, Otley Pub Club held a pre-loved book sale in the Rose & Crown. Huge thanks to landlord Steve for allowing us to run the event and helping out. We raised nearly £200 for OPC funds – thanks to all who took part. We hope you have an enjoyable read!
Here’s a few words on the event from our Sec:
“It seems all our adverts on social media and in last month’s newsletter paid off for the book sale coinciding with World Book Day, as we’re pleased to say it was a great success! Many of the pub’s customers spent time browsing the display that covered three tables and two sets of bookshelves in a window alcove of the Rose & Crown. Others came in just to look through the books – and still others came just to leave us a donation of books of their own! In fact, I’m not sure we didn’t end up with more books than we started with!
Sadly, some of those who came in to look at the books were not interested in staying for a beer or a coffee or even a bag of crisps. Some without even the decency to say hello to the staff as they wondered in and out apparently!
Still, we are hugely grateful to Steve at The Rose & Crown for letting us ‘set up shop’ in his pub. We hope that at least some of those who came to look at the books will have realised what a nice place it is, and will come back again to try the food and drinks on offer. If nothing else, it has shown that you don’t have to be the only pub in a village to try to provide a different set of services for your customers, and that those services can still be successful even when you’re surrounded by other pubs and shops.
The same goes for the Ossett ‘Tap Takeover’ at The Horse & Farrier last month. [See article elsewhere in this newsletter.] From the two events, Otley Pub Club benefited to the tune of nearly £200, which will really help us to maintain our website and communications presence and to continue our work to promote and support all the pubs in town. So once again, a massive thankyou to the publicans and staff at The Rose & Crown and The Horse & Farrier for working with us to put on the two events.
If any other pubs in town have any events they would like us to help them organise and promote, just let us know! Likewise, if anyone reading this would like to see a new or different service, event or product made available in a pub, please do get in touch at info@otleypubclub.co.uk and we’ll see what we can do to help.
So, yes, OPC also ran Tap Takeover in conjunction with Ossett Brewery was held at the Horse & Farrier. We had a healthy number of attendees who took advantage of the Discount Card on offer, and also enjoyed quizzes, raffles and random prize-givings courtesy of Ossett Brewery who we thank tremendously and of course the H&F team for hosting the event. We hope they found it profitable! It was decided the “best” beer of the night was Rose Petal IPA (An Ossett/Adnams collaboration brew) – lovely!
Watch out for more Pub Club events in the near future – Gin Tasting anyone????
We all know that the economic situation is affecting businesses of all sorts, as well as domestic users. With this in mind, it’s understandable that some of our bars and pubs are adjusting their opening hours accordingly. More details as we get them of course. We will try to keep our website up to date, but it’s a very fluid situation so please bear with us and our hard-pressed publicans. Perhaps, check out with the venue to confirm opening times?
And of course, a call out to all publicans, if you do change hours/days of opening, please let us know via info@otleypubclub.co.uk and we’ll endeavour to get the word out there.
We’ve got the usual categories this month of Otley Events, Pub News, Pub Events and our “And Finally” piece features a new Pub of the Month!
Here we go…. OTLEY EVENTS
Otley Pub Walkers
Watch out for more regular meets and walks around the area. Last month’s walk took our intrepids a bit further afield to sample the delights Meanwood Valley Trail – https://meanwoodvalleytrail.co.uk/
An often overlooked gem. We did the 7 mile walk from Golden Acre Park into Leeds, once in midweek and the other at the weekend. What a delight. Winter walks are often disregarded but the views through the woods along the valley with leafless trees are amazing. Ok, not quite snowdrop or bluebell time, but that’s for later.
On reaching Leeds the first pub visited was The Fenton – often described as a student hangout, but what a delight! Great selection of beers. Lovely oak panelling. A proper pub! Some then X84’d home while others ventured further into the metropolis to sample the delights of the Templar Hotel, Angel (don’t use your phone!), Lamb & Flag and Duck & Drake – then X84 home – what a great day.
Why not get involved? More detail on this plus other planned walks by checking out their Facebook site: https://www.facebook.com/OtleyPubWalkers

MORE NEWS ON THE OTLEY PUB CLUB YORKSHIRE DAY PROJECT 2023
You might remember we introduced this project in the March Newsletter and said we would announce it fully at the end of March. Since then, we’ve realised we don’t need to allow quite so much time for it to be launched and delivered by August 1st as we originally thought. So I’m afraid we’ll now be keeping you on tenterhooks until mid-May (after the Coronation of King Charles III). Until then, here’s another teaser –
We all know there’s something special about Otley’s pubs – that’s why Otley Pub Club volunteers work so hard to support and promote them. Well, coming soon, everyone in town will have the chance to show how much they agree with us – with the chance of winning fame and fortune (or maybe just a small prize) into the bargain!
The full media launch won’t now take place until Monday May 15th but our May Newsletter will contain details of how you can play your part in showing the rest of the world why Otley’s pubs are so special!

PUB NEWS
Cross Pipes
Otley’s latest Freehold pub is currently closed. We don’t have any more news as yet. You’ll get it as soon as we do.
Manor House
IMPORTANT! All very quiet from sellers Thwaites as to the state of play. We understand that their selling price is deterring potential buyers (of which there were a few) due to the cost of repairs needed. There’s a PUBLIC MEETING THIS WEDNESDAY 12th April at Shadow Brewing from 7.30pm to re-launch the Community Bid. Please come along and show your support! As we said, the Community Bid Team is still in place and the project has 2 key objectives:
1) To save The Manor House as a truly historic pub
2) To create a unique Community Pub in our famous pub town
The group’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/809850323595408 Or, you can follow the Community Pub Group on Twitter: @otleycommpub More public meetings are planned as the fund raising gets underway. Keep an eye on the Community Pub social media sites and if you want news, get in touch or provide support, all are welcome. Contacts above.
Summercross
It appears that the last planning application has been withdrawn. We are not at all surprised by this. The poor quality application was full of holes and discrepancies. Watch this space for more news!
Otley Tavern
You may have noticed that a sign has gone up at the Tav. Either Freehold or Leasehold is on offer – free of any brewery tie.
Horse & Farrier
Again, Freehold or Leasehold up for sale. Freehold, Leasehold, Free of Tie – what does it all mean?
We’ve covered these items before but in summary:
Freehold = you buy the building. Like when you buy your house
Leasehold = the building owner rents you the building for an annual fee. The details of the lease can vary tremendously
Free-of-Tie = You are not bound to take stock from a particular supplier, brewery, pubco etc.

But here’s a recurring plea to all the landlords in town – please drop us a line to info@otleypubclub.co.uk if there’s something you want us to put in the newsletter! Although we try to share all your social media posts, we don’t sit reading Facebook and Twitter all day every day and scanning them all every month when we’re producing the news for our 700 readers takes hours. Worse than that, some of the media – even on websites – might be out of date, but we have no real way of knowing, so we might be giving out completely wrong information!
Also please note that the offers and prices are correct to the best of our knowledge. Please check with the venue whilst ordering. OPC cannot be responsible for any discrepancies.
AND FINALLY…. PUB OF THE MONTH for April is……..The CURIOUS HOP BIÈRE CAFÉ
Marcus Garcia has been the proprietor of the Curious Hop beer shop in Newmarket for almost exactly 10 years now, and has built up a reputation locally and online for selling quality beers from home and abroad.
For much of that time he was also considering whether, and where in Otley, he might open a bar to sell the same beers on the premises. For a while before the Covid shutdowns, he was selling from the taps in the shop itself but that was always a bit cramped, so when the lease of the Bière Café (previously the Groove Pad, and Rocca) In Orchard Gate became available, he jumped at the chance to take it on. But don’t worry – he’ll definitely be keeping the shop open for your takeaway/drink at home needs as well.
The bar is a joint venture with the excellent Major Tom’s Social in Harrogate, which already had a bit of a reputation for its beers and its pizza. In Orchard Gate, the Bière Café doesn’t need to supply its own pizza, as it has an agreement with A Casa di Alessia directly opposite, that people can buy takeaway pizza there and eat it inside or outside the bar while sampling the Bière Café’s range of beers.
And that’s not the only way the bar is branching out. There are board and other games available to play in the bar and there’s a ‘Books and Bière’ book reading club on the first Wednesday of every month (with discount on the beer AND the books).
There has also already been the first of a series of meet the brewer/beer tasting events – this one with Ric Brown from The Kernel Brewery in South London.
So, if you haven’t called in yet, why not give it a go. The bar specialises in the same craft and European beers that Marcus sells in the Curious Hop.
Dogs and children are welcome and there are tables outside for the good weather that’s just starting! Honest!

A massive THANK YOU!!! Otley Pub Club’s JustGiving campaign was launched in July and we are delighted by the donations we’ve received so far – from far and wide!! Remember, our only source of income previously has been our Premier Membership card, which offered discounts at local pubs and bars. We decided post-Covid that this was not in the best interest of our hard-working publicans to beg them for money off when finances were tight. Even more so now in the economic crisis we all face. So we have temporarily suspended the Card scheme.
All of the contributions have provided valuable funds (primarily to pay off long standing debt) for us as we continue our aim of promoting and protecting Otley’s great pubs and bringing in much needed revenue to all businesses in the town generally. BUT, we haven’t closed the appeal. More funds would allow us to do more promotions. We understand times are hard, but just the price of small round of drinks would help us tremendously. Every little helps.
Thank you in advance. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/otleypubclub?utm_term=pAn9rRjkX
Otley Pub Club meet up in a different pub in Otley on the first Thursday of every month to discuss anything and everything happening in Otley and in its pubs, and everybody is welcome to join us.
We start at about 7pm to discuss any semi-formal stuff, then finish with that at 8pm and spend the rest of the evening chatting about whatever comes up. We’ll usually visit 3 pubs during the evening.
So, if you fancy perhaps seeing the inside of a pub that you’ve never been in; or you’ve got a burning issue about Otley’s pubs that you’ve been dying to share; or maybe if you just fancy a drink and a chat and all your mates are doing something else; check out the times on our Facebook event page for our next meeting and you can join us at any time in any of the pubs along the way. We’ll be in these pubs and at least one of us will be wearing something black with an obvious Otley Pub Club logo on it so we’re recognisable!
Next Pub Club Social: Thursday 4th May 2023 – where we will be talking all things “Star Wars” among other stuff. Venues and times will be posted on our Social Media nearer the time. Watch out for the Facebook event.
Well folks, that’s it for this month. Please remember, if you want to get in touch email to info@otleypubclub.co.uk, or why not come along to one of our monthly socials… Cheers for now.
See you all out and about in our #FamousPubTown
