After I’d abused your inbox by sending out an additional email advertising a 5-band charity gig in Bay Horse Court, it never actually took place! Just after I’d sent out the email, the weather forecast was predicting such heavy rain on Bank Holiday Monday that the whole event had to be cancelled! In the end, the weather wasn’t quite as bad as they thought, but it certainly wasn’t the best. So I do apologise if you made a special trip into Otley, only to discover the music wasn’t on – but if you did, I hope you didn’t waste the opportunity to dry out in a pub!

Once again we’re postponing the usual OPC social trip round 3 different Otley pubs this month. This time it’s because of the ‘formal’ opening night at The Black Horse Hotel. As you probably know by now, The Black Horse re-opened just before the Tour de France came through Otley at the beginning of July. Since then, they’ve been putting the finishing touches to the furniture and décor, finalising the menu, and making sure that the  letting rooms have been thoroughly advertised and that the bookings have started coming through.

Now the new landlords are completely happy to show off the Hotel to everyone in Otley, and to show how pleased they are to welcome you, they’ll be providing FREE fizz and pizza from 5pm onwards on Thursday evening, the 4th of September. OPC committee members will be arriving down there from 5-o-clock onwards and at 7 we’ll find somewhere quiet to hold our committee meeting for about an hour. Then we’ll come back to the bar and join in the ‘opening’ celebrations, so if you want to come and say hello, just look for the OPC banner and we’ll be sitting next to it!

As this is a one-off event, and there are likely to be a lot of people visiting the pub during the evening, we thought we’d stay there rather than ask you to follow us round town this time. [Mind you – depending on how many people turn up at 5, the free food and fizz might well have run out well before we emerge from our meeting!]

There won’t be a 3-stop mini pub crawl next month either, as October is the month for our Annual General Meeting. We’ll be holding it at The Royalty, on Yorkgate at the top of Otley Chevin, so it’s a good excuse to have a trip up there if you still haven’t managed to make it since it was re-opened earlier this year. Watch out for more details in the September Newsletter.

You might have heard that The Manor House is closed at the moment, but it WILL be open again in time for The Otley Folk Festival. This is what they say – “Due to electrical work and cellar maintenance, the pub is closed and will re-open during the week commencing Monday 15th September.
