Otley Victorian Fayre was originally the brainchild of Otley Chamber of Commerce. They wanted to give the town’s shops a boost in the run up to Christmas and chose the Victorian theme because it was in the Victorian era that Christmas, as we now know it, really started.
The first Fayre was held in 1985 and was an immediate success. Within a couple of years the Chamber of Trade realised that it had become too large for them to continue running, and so a voluntary committee was formed under the umbrella ‘Otley Victorian Fayre’, a company Limited By Guarantee.
Over the years the volunteers have come and gone. All have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Fayre stays true to the aims that were set down by its founders, which is to promote Otley and encourage visitors to our beautiful town.
Otley Pub Club were again proud to have taken part in this year’s Otley Victorian Fayre.
9 of the towns Pubs took part in celebrating this wonderful event by dressing in Victorian costumes, providing entertainment and food for all. Teas, Coffee and even Mulled Wine with Mince Pies were available. Each one getting into the spirit of the event, and competing for a chance to win the Otley Victorian Ale House Award.
In previous years members of Otley Pub Club Committee would visit each ale house participating to Judge the Winners, but this year they opted to have mystery drinker’s visit and then meet with our Chairman Peter Jackson and Membership Secretary Fiona Jackson to give the results. Neither had met or known the identity of the Judges prior to meeting after the judging to keep it a much unbiased opinion. Otley Pub Club thanks David & Alison Ginn for been our Judges and who have no affiliation to any pub or the Otley Pub Club. We also thank Fiona Jackson for all the photographs displayed on Otley Pub Club facebbook for viewing.
The Award was presented by Cllr Mary Vickers (town mayor) Greg Mulholland MP, Cllr Jim Spenser and Peter Jackson (Chair Otley Pub Club)
Otley Pub Club gives thanks and praise to all members of the Otley Victorian Fayre Committee for once again organising a fantastic family event and look forward to next year where we are sure more pubs will take part.
