The Yew Tree Inn, on Newall Carr Road in Otley, has re-opened after undergoing two weeks of refurbishment work overseen by licensees Barry and Linda Tomlinson.
Roger Blackburn and Brian Bentley, regular customers at the pub since 1972, marked the official opening by cutting the ribbon.
Otley Pub Club Andy FitzGerald, Secretary Bob Brook and other committee members including Local MP Greg Mulholland and Preisdent of Otley Pub Club, attended the re-opening and complemented Barry and Linda for retaining the pub’s character.
Commenting Barry and Linda Tomlinson said:
“The pub has been redecorated in a traditional style , giving it a fresher look . New toilets have been installed and some of the fixed seating has been removed to make way for an open plan area with new furniture. Linda and I are pleased with the pub’s new look and that it has kept its local identity within the community. Our customers love the fresher look but are really pleased that we have kept the warm and friendly feel. The fireplace especially is now a focal point in the pub. “We believe we have created a great environment for all and we have been overwhelmed by the support from local residents. The makeover has been well received in all areas by our customers, commenting that the pub is now more welcoming. “We have had great support from Punch Taverns in re-launching and encourage those who haven’t done so to come and see the new look.”
The refurbishment work mainly involved putting in a brand new fireplace, making changes to the seating plan, laying out new carpets and refitting the bathrooms. The cost of the work ran into thousands of pounds.
Chairman of Otley Pub Club, Andy Fitzgerald, also added his praise for the work done:
“We are very happy to see the Yew Tree reopen after the recent refurbishment, the new decor enhances the character of the Yew Tree. Barry has to be congratulated and has managed to keep the character of the pub alive. This is another example of Punch investing in Otley’s pubs demonstrating confidence in the trade in Otley.”
Greg Mulholland MP & President of Otley Pub Club said:
“Congratulations to Linda and Barry on the excellent refurbishment of the Yew Tree. It has retained the character of the pub, which is included in CAMRA’s Yorkshire’s Heritage Pubs, but given it an attractive refit which makes the pub even more welcoming. The Yew Tree is one of Otley’s great community pubs and the only one north of the river, so I hope this will encourage even more people to use it.”
Bob Brook, Otley Pub Club membership secretary added:
“It was great to see so many people enjoying the newly re-furbished Yew Tree pub when it re-opened. The new layout is really bright and comfortable, as well as being more flexible and able to cope with more people. The customers I spoke to were especially impressed with the new fire, that seemed to keep the whole building warm, the brand new toilets – and of course the buffet, which was delicious! It’s good to see yet another Otley pub having the confidence to spend money and look forward to the future in the current climate.”
Andy Brady, Partnerships Development Manager of Punch Taverns, said:
“We’re delighted to invest in sites such as this. The investment has re-established the Yew Tree a family-friendly pub, serving great, home-made food and quality drinks for local residents.
“Barry and Linda are proven operators and have some great plans to deliver a fantastic customer experience and they have our full support. They can now cater for more people and with more and more community groups also using the pub as a meeting place and local residents booking the lounge for functions, they really can offer something for everyone.
“Following the successful launch, we have every confidence Barry & Linda can take the Yew Tree from strength to strength.”
