Otley Pub Club membership drive gets off to flying start
Otley Pub Club’s new membership drive got off to a flying start last week (March 5) at its monthly social meeting. Twenty new members signed up and were welcomed by club chairman Andy FitzGerald and club president Greg Mulholland at the event held at the Horse & Farrrier on Bridge Street.
Speaking after the event Andy FitzGerald said: “It was great to welcome so many new faces and to meet people who not only enjoy having a variety of pubs in Otley but also value them as being important to the community and a valuable asset to the town. We look forward to seeing them and their friends at future social meetings.”
A highlight of the evening was the ‘Meet the Brewer’ event with Ilkley Brewery. Sales and marketing manager Luke Raven gave a guided tour of the brewery’s ales, leading off with the best selling ‘Mary Jane’.
Otley Pub Club is a voluntary community organisation which supports and promotes the town’s pubs. Membership is free and open to all, not just residents, who appreciate Otley’s famous pubs. Current membership is over 300 with some members far and wide including one in Australia. There are monthly social gatherings, an entertaining and useful monthly newsletter and a website (www.otleypubclub.co.uk) with a wealth of information about what’s on, history of the pubs and the famous Otley Ale Trail.
The Club is also a way for the pubs to communicate what they are offering as well as coordinating their participation in many of the town’s events. It campaigns against pub closures and on other issues affecting pubs in the town. The Club contributes to the promotion of the town in general through publicity and lobbying and supports other major Otley events and festivals.
