January News Letter

OTLEY PUB CLUB

JANUARY NEWSLETTER 2014

A [very belated] Happy New Year to you all! Just a few general news items before the usual round-up of pub business this month:

’DRY JANUARY’

I know it’s always a popular start to the New Year, for people to cut back on their alcohol after the excesses of the festive period – and no doubt your body will thank you for it. However, do try to remember the publicans that OPC does its best to support, and think what it does to their business when everybody ‘stops’ drinking for a month. Obviously we’re not promoting excessive alcohol consumption – you can still go to the pub for a game of darts or doms, and have a pint of a diet soft drink if you want. But just look at this item from ITV Border news, to see what effect it has when you stay away completely!

VISIT YORKSHIRE FOR THE BEER

Just a few months after being named ‘European Destination 2013’ at the World Travel Awards in Turkey; and then being The Lonely Planet Guide’s third-best place in the whole World to visit in 2014; we’ve won yet another international accolade! The New York Times, no less, puts Yorkshire at number 22 in its list of 52 places to go in 2014, solely because of its beer!

TOUR COMES THROUGH OTLEY AT MIDDAY

Now that the official race timings have been announced for the Grand Départ, you can work out exactly where you want to be when it goes past, and which pub to reserve a place in, so you can get a pie and a pint afterwards! [Because, believe me, they will be busy!] The first vehicles of Le Tour Caravane should hit Otley at about ten past ten on the morning of Saturday the 5th of July, and the Peloton itself about two hours later. Pubs directly on the route are: The White Swan; The Bay Horse; The Cross Pipes; and The Fleece (and of course The Black Horse!) but most of the others are only a couple of minutes away – and they’ll all be glad to see you!

PUB NEWS

No more news yet about THE BLACK HORSE, but you can rest assured we’re trying  to find out what’s happening, and that we’ll let you know as soon as we hear anything other than rumours. And talking of rumours, you might have heard very strong ones that THE BRIDGE was about to close its doors in January. That certainly isn’t true, and I’ve already spoken to the new manager – Jacques – who has come over to Otley from Selby, where he’d been for some time. Mind you, it was only his first day here – so he couldn’t really tell me anything yet about future plans for the place. Again, we’ll keep you in touch with developments [but if you want to practice your French in the meantime, call in and say bonjour!]

Lights have been seen on in THE ROYALTY on top of the Chevin for ages, but we’re still not sure whether anyone’s ‘home’! It might meet its Spring 2014 deadline for re-opening, but the Pub Club has written to the owners – The Wellington Pub Company – to ask for a specific re-opening date, and to register our strong opposition to the historic name of The Royalty being changed after refurbishment.

WHAT’S ON FOR THE NEXT 4 WEEKS?

Again I apologise to all Otley’s pubs if I’ve missed out anything that’s happening up to and including Valentine’s Day. As usual, I can only advise you to drop into your local and see what else they’ve got on! I’ve been gathering as much information as possible about all the regular offers and events at every pub, and that will be used to update all the individual pub details on the Pub Club website – http://www.otleypubclub.co.uk/ – just as soon as we can. So below are just the main details of ‘specials’ for the next month.

WHITAKERS – All day, every day throughout Jan and Feb, 2 bottles for £5 on Estrella, San Miguel, and Coors Light. 30p off all draught ale on Sundays, 12:00 to 14:00 as well as 2 Sunday roast main courses for only £5.

THE OLD COCK – You might not know that the upstairs area, which can comfortably seat 15 to 20, is available to book for functions and meetings. Catering can be provided – just ask staff for details.

THE OTLEY TAVERN – As well as their regular music nights, there’ll be 2 Valentine’s Discos, on Thursday the 13th and Saturday the 15th of Feb. Sandwiched between them, on Valentine’s Day itself, there will be a live solo artist. [And talking of sandwiches – watch out for food coming soon to the Tavern.]

THE FLEECE – As well as their regular menu, there’ll be special set menus on Burns’ Night [Saturday Jan 25] and Valentine’s Day [Friday 14 Feb] keep an eye on their website, or call in for details.

THE CROSS PIPES – Always has ‘themed’ nights for special occasions, so watch out for their special events on Burns’ Night and Valentine’s Day as well.

THE ROEBUCK – Yes – more specials for Burns’ Night and Valentine’s Day, so once again keep checking their website or call in. [By the way, when I was up there this week, I heard someone saying Port and Prosecco tasted a bit like Vimto – so you could always try that out sometime!]

THE YEW TREE – The big news here is that the pub will be closing for 2 weeks from 10 February for a major refurbishment, so make the most of it while you can over the next 3 weeks. Back next month, though – watch out for the official re-opening.

THE BRIDGE – Like I said above, Jacques has only just arrived this week, but he has confirmed that the open mic night will still take place on Thursday nights, as well as all the major live sporting events on the big screen of course. Get yourselves down there and make him feel welcome!

THE BAY HORSE – Now, I think I know what RUK and ATR stand for – and I’m sure that if you do, you’ll be interested in going to the Bay Horse! The rest of us just go for the real ale and sandwiches, and the cosy pub atmosphere!

THE HORSE AND FARRIER – You can still get £10 off your food bill for the rest of January by filling in the form on the Market Town Taverns website, at http://www.markettowntaverns.co.uk/index.asp or asking at the bar. They’ve got a traditional Burns’ Night meal including a free beer or whisky for £9:95; and a 3-course Valentine’s dinner on both the 14th and 15th of Feb at £21:95

THE BLACK BULL – Keep checking with the pub to see when they have live music or a disco, and remember – Cromwell’s troops allegedly drank the Black Bull dry, and the next day they defeated the Royalists at Marston Moor. So the beer must be pretty good . . .

THE WHITE SWAN – No update on specials over the next 4 weeks yet, but they do have themed menus Monday to Thursday until 21:00, and their usual wide range of real ales to wash them down!

THE MANOR HOUSE – Ken and Karen have really settled in here now, with a Thursday quiz night being added from the end of January; Monday night darts competition; Friday night DJ and Karaoke; and Saturday night live music. There’s also the possibility of one of the barns being converted to include a pool table, so watch this space!

THE ROSE AND CROWN – No update on specials over the next 4 weeks yet, but the usual daily food offers, Tuesday quiz, and weekend discos will continue.

THE JUNCTION – “Soul-tinged pop-funk” band Barcode Zebra will be playing live from 21:00 on Burns Night. H v H from 16:00 Sunday the 26th of Jan, and Time Warp from 21:00 on Saturday 08 Feb.

THE RED LION – Will be continuing its successful live sports events screenings, with Leeds v Leicester at 12:15 tomorrow –  Saturday Jan 18th. What’s more, the function room can be hired free; the pool table is free on Mondays; and there’s a loyalty card scheme from Monday to Friday, 12:00 til 19:00 – buy 7 pints, and get the 8th free.

THE NORTH BAR – Still has its mulled cider and rum that proved so popular over the festive period, they just can’t let them go. No date yet for its BrewDog tasting event, so again – watch this space or call in and find out.

THE BOWLING GREEN – The usual Wetherspoon’s food and real ale throughout the period. As well as the new ‘Wing-it Wednesday’ Chicken Club, they’re doing their regular Valentine’s Day promotion – a main meal, a dessert and a drink for two people just £20 on Friday the 14th of Feb.
