Yorkshire celebrities paired with Otley’s pubs for Yorkshire Day

Fancy a pint in the Alan Bennett or a glass of wine in the Nicola Adams? If you pop into one of Otley’s pubs this time next year you will find they have changed their names to those of famous Yorkshire people.

An FA Cup style draw was used last night (August 1st Yorkshire Day) to pair up the names of Yorkshire celebrities with one of each of Otley’s 21 pubs to rename them for Yorkshire Day next year.

At a packed event in the Black Horse Hotel, legendary comedian Charlie Chuck, from the Reeves and Mortimer 1990s’ hit TV show, conducted the draw along with Otley resident Dave Pentelow who won the public prize in the on-line survey which was organised by Otley Pub Club to choose the public’s favourite Yorkshire celebrities.

The first pair matched in the draw were singer Corinne Bailey-Rae and the White Swan.

The full list is Alan Bennett – The Cross Pipes;

Anita Rani – Stew & Oyster;

Corinne Bailey-Rae – The White Swan;

Angela Griffin –The Bay Horse;

Dickie Bird – Otley Tavern;

Dynamo – The Roebuck;

Sir Gary Verity – The Black Horse;

Bob Brook, secretary of Otley Pub Club and organiser of the project, said: “The draw threw up some interesting pairings and no doubt will lead to some heated discussions. It is a bit of fun as well as a good way of showing the affection that Otley people have for famous sons and daughters of Yorkshire. It’s a diverse list and shows what an inclusive town Otley is.

“We want to thank all those who helped and completed the survey, Wharfedale Waygooze who provided entertainment, The Black Horse hotel and Doris Dent Estates and Charlie Chuck,” added Bob.

Otley Pub Club will now spend the next 12 months contacting each of the celebrities, and inviting them to visit, on Yorkshire Day 2018, the pub that has been re-named in their honour! If they can’t make it, they will be asked to send at least a piece of memorabilia or a video message to the pub in question.
