OTLEY PUB CLUB
SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER 2016
OTLEY FOLK FESTIVAL SPECIAL 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION!
Next weekend – from the 16th to the 18th of September – sees the silver jubilee of one of Otley’s much-loved annual traditions – the Otley Folk Festival. As it not only brings hundreds of visitors into town over the weekend, but also attracts business directly into pubs where the music is taking place, it’s only right that we should dedicate this newsletter to them and to their successful longevity!
Of course I STILL can’t avoid talking about the weather! The Zombie Apocalypse last month managed to avoid the worst of the weather [but not all the local complaints, sadly], but the Mod and Scooter Rally suffered a couple of wet days and a correspondingly disappointing turnout for some of the gigs. What’s more, this Saturday morning, when I and other volunteers will be setting up the field at Knotford Nook for the Otley Vintage Transport Extravaganza on Sunday, there is once again a forecast for heavy and constant rain!
So let’s put all that behind us and look forward to a weekend of music, song and dance – much of which takes place indoors anyway!
OFF 25 – WHAT’S ON?
All this, according to one of their flyers –
CAMPING * COMEDY * CEILIDH * CONCERTS * CRAFT MARKET * PUB SESSIONS * LATE NIGHT EVENTS * FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT * MORRIS DANCING * POEMS AND PINTS * REAL ALE * THE REVERB PROJECT * SEA SONGS * SINGAROUNDS * STREET ENTERTAINMENT * WORKSHOPS
OFF 25 – WHEREABOUTS?
The main venues [in alphabetical order] will be –
BLACK HORSE HOTEL * KORKS WINE BAR * LABOUR CLUB * METHODIST HALL * OTLEY COURTHOUSE * PARISH CHURCH
We believe the Horse and Farrier sessions have had to be moved at the last minute, to The Fleece and the Labour Club – so watch out for updates!
OFF 25 – WHO’S APPEARING?
There are far too many performers appearing over the weekend to mention here, I’m afraid, and I can only suggest you pick up one of the flyers [see photo] or better still buy a Festival Programme [also pictured] for £2:50 to find out all the details about all the artistes and where and when they’re appearing.
The line-up for the landmark ‘silver jubilee’ event includes Du Temps Antan, The Churchfitters, Lucy Ward and Vin Garbutt. It will also see the reunion of many of the original acts who performed at the inaugural Otley Folk Festival in 1991, including Stanley Accrington, Robin Garside, Dave Vermond, Last Orders and Tanglefoot.
OFF 25 – WHAT ABOUT THE PUBS?
These are just a few of the events you can see completely free in some of the pubs in town over the weekend [taken from the OFF programme – so do check with individual pubs and/or the Festival Office for any additions or changes.

Other pubs will be putting on their own entertainment as usual over the weekend as well, so check out The Red Lion, Whitakers, North Bar Social, The Black Bull and The Rose and Crown when you’re in town to see if there’s anything going on!
OFF 25 – WILL THERE BE DANCING IN THE STREETS?
There certainly will! There will be no fewer than 7 Morris sides in town on Saturday, starting at 11:00 both at the maypole and outside Woolpack studios and finishing with a mass dance including all seven sides at 16:00 at the rear of the White Swan. There will also be dancing outside Otley Courthouse and in Bay Horse Court at various times during the day. Pick a favourite and follow them round, or pick a favourite location and see who turns up!
On Sunday, Flash Company, Roll Back the Carpet and Ragged Robin will be dancing outside the Bay Horse from 11:00 to 12:30, and outside the Woolpack Studios from 13:30 to 15:30.
OFF 25 – HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

OFF 25 – DO THEY NEED ANY STEWARDS TO HELP?
They certainly do! As I’ve pointed out in previous editions of this newsletter, most of the fabulous Otley events just couldn’t function without the wonderful people who give up their own time to help deliver them. So if you would like to be a steward at Otley Folk Festival this year, as well as seeing some of the acts on offer, they are still looking for extra bodies to help the 25th festival to be a success. Please contact Janet Neve – 01943 511240 for more details.
POEMS AND PUBS
Plans have been finalised for the launch of the latest collection of poems to be published by Otley Word Feast Press. The launch party will be on Thursday the 6th of October in The Horse and Farrier pub on Bridge Street, Otley. We chose that date because it is National Poetry Day, and we chose a pub because it’s a collection of ‘Poems About Pubs’. It’s entitled Half Moon, after the historic pub on Beech Hill in Otley, where Otley Word Feast Press now have their office.
The evening’s event will begin at 19:00, when Half Moon will go on sale for £1 less than the published price – for one night only! There will be time to buy a drink and mingle with the poets and musicians until the performers will be introduced by Otley Town Poet, Matthew Stoppard at 19:30. For the next half hour, some of the poets whose poems are in the book will read them out on stage, followed by music from members of the band Summercross. After another short break to buy more drinks and books, the second half of the night will follow the same format as the first, with Jon Palmer providing the music this time. The event will end at about 22:00, when the usual Thursday night Horse & Farrier open mic night led by Paul Briscoe will take over till closing time.
This should be a really enjoyable night, where we can be proud of the town and its many talented people. Promoted by an independent Otley book Publisher, supported by Otley Pub Club, with poetry and music from Otley poets and musicians (and others), in collaboration with an Otley pub and Briscoe’s Otley Brewery [who have said they might even have a specially named beer ready for the night – so look out for that!] So please, do try to come on down at some time during the evening, and tell all your friends as well. Let’s make this a huge success!
OTLEY PUB CLUB AGM
Normally the AGM would be on the first Thursday of October, but National Poetry Day has usurped that, so we’ve had to move back a week to the 13th. I’ll be sending out a special AGM invitation soon, with the agenda for the night, and asking amongst other things whether anyone would like to join the OPC committee. [One rather important person wants to stand down this year!] So watch out for that.
