Otley pubs to host biggest ever BBC Radio Leeds pub crawl quiz for Children in Need!

Tomorrow, Thursday 15 November, Otley pubs are hosting a special Children in Need pub crawl quiz, with the towns famous pubs all being invited to prove themselves the town’s cleverest pub! The event, organised by BBC Radio Leeds and supported by Otley Pub Club, will be the radio station’s biggest pub quiz ever!

The event will be hosted by Richard Stead (who presents the Richard Stead Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Leeds, weekdays 6-9am).

Otley’s pub quiz teams – and other organisations and anyone who likes a good pub quiz – are invited to meet at the Horse and Farrier Pub, Bridge Street with registration at 7pm for a 7:30pm start. The quiz is open to everyone, 18 and over.

The Otley Bellman, Terry Ford, will be leading teams to the Black Horse, the Black Bull and finishing at the Otley Tavern where the winners will be announced – with BBC Radio Leeds presenting a trophy to the top team.

The idea for the Pub Crawl Quiz happened when BBC Radio Leeds contacted Otley Pub Club and discussed ways of involving the pubs of Otley in the event, something that Otley Pub Club were delighted to help with. Otley is one of the town’s in the country that vies for the accolade of having most pubs, with a remarkable 22 pubs currently open for a small market town of 15,000 people.

As well as the main BBC Radio Leeds trophy for top team overall, Otley Pub Club will give a new trophy to the highest placed team from an Otley pub. This is a new trophy, the Mulholland Cup, that will be awarded from this year onwards, at an annual Otley interpub quiz to Otley’s cleverest pub! The cup is named after Greg Mulholland, as founder of Otley Pub Club and President.

Teams of 4 are asked to make a suggested donation of £10 and all the money raised will go to this year’s Children in Need appeal.

Richard Stead, BBC Leeds presenter, who is hosting the event commented

“This year will be BBC Radio Leeds’ biggest and best pub quiz. I’m looking forward to meeting the people of Otley and testing their knowledge! It should be a fun evening – and of course it’s all for a good cause, with all the money going to Children in Need”.

Matt Hardin, Chair of Otley Pub Club commented:

“Otley Pub Club are excited to help and support Children in Need with the BBC Radio Leeds Pub Quiz Crawl, which will also be our first interpub event. Events like this show the importance of pubs. Not only are they social hubs but they serve as venues to bring people together as a community. Otley Pub Club are delighted to provide and sponsor the Mulholland Cup and hope it is the start of a long tradition in interpub quizzes.”

Greg Mulholland, President of Otley Pub Club and an Otley Ambassador said:

“It’s fantastic that BBC Radio Leeds have chosen Otley for their special Pub Crawl Quiz for Children in Need! With Otley being a famous pub town, it’s the perfect choice for this event and I hope to see lots of teams entering!

“I’m sure the BBC Radio Leeds Pub Quiz Crawl will be a great event and I sure that the pubs and people of Otley will get behind it raising money for Children in Need, which helps support so many good causes”.

“I’m also touched and honoured that Otley Pub Club have named the trophy for the town’s ‘cleverest pub’ after me, to start an annual tradition!”
