OTLEY PUB CLUB
JUNE NEWSLETTER 2016
A very brief intro for a sadly brief newsletter. I wanted to get it out before Saturday to advertise Sunday’s Food and Drink Festival, but I realise that some of you might be reading this via your work email address on Monday morning. Sorry!
FINGERS CROSSED AGAIN!
It did eventually turn out sunny and reasonably warm for The Road To Marston Moor event on Sunday the 3rd of July. Saturday the 2nd was a bit chilly and damp, but a couple of hundred people still turned up and seemed to enjoy themselves. Many thanks to them, and to the thousands who turned out on Sunday. I hope you did all enjoy it, and we really appreciate your support. It means we’ll be getting involved in many more events big and small over the coming months.
The first of those will be this Sunday, July 17th, when Otley Pub Club will have a stall at the Otley Food and Drink Festival. And here’s the ‘fingers crossed’ bit – “Breezy on Sunday with bright or sunny intervals and scattered showers” in Otley, according to Friday’s BBC online forecast. Let’s hope we don’t get blown away!
FREE BEER TASTING, AND ‘Mr PINTY’
We’ve got stand number 38 for the Food and Drink festival on Sunday, which is roughly on the opposite side of Boroughgate from Oxfam. We’ll be handing out copies of the Historic Otley Ale Trail, and OPC membership forms to visitors, and answering questions about Otley’s pubs – and Otley Pub Club itself, of course.
At 13:45, we also take over the stall at the side of the main stage in the Market Place, where we’ll be giving away tastings [in very small glasses!] of 3 different types of beer, kindly donated by our local brewery – Wharfebank, from Pool in Wharfedale. Many thanks yet again to Martin Kellaway, who has long been a good friend of Otley Pub Club. There’s also likely to be a rare appearance of the mythical ‘Mr Pinty’, so keep an eye out for him!
Of course, the festival will also have about 50 stalls promoting and providing various other drinks and food, as well as having major demonstrations and talks on the main stage, so it’s well worth a trip into Otley town centre. Open from 10:00 to 16:00.
OTLEY MOD AND SCOOTER RALLY
From Friday the 19th of August to Sunday the 21st, complete with live bands in pubs around town, dozens (and dozens) of scooters, a ride out to Harewood and beyond, and generally just a lot of people having a good time. The website is at http://www.otleymodrally.webeden.co.uk/home/4592554002 , there’s a Facebook page for ‘Otley Mod and Scooter Rally’ and wristbands are on sale now. In fact you can still manage to get a fiver off, if you buy them by next Tuesday the 19th. I had a quick word with Andy at Whitakers this week, and apart from a few problems like trying to get Highways to let all the scooters park in a row on Kirkgate, everything’s coming together nicely. Another event bringing visitors to the town, and making good use of the pubs.
OTLEY ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, 13-8-16
Yep – if you were ever superstitious about going out on the 13th, you’d do well to avoid Otley in the middle of August. On Saturday night, the town will once again be invaded by the undead, and people trying desperately to escape their clutches. You never know when one might lurch out of an alley in front of you, so if you’re of a nervous disposition – COME ON DOWN, AND BE SCARED TO DEATH!
At the time of writing this on Friday night, 15/07 there were only 36 tickets left for those who want to take part in the event [and not just creep very carefully from pub to pub, like me!], and they can be bought at https://otleyzombieapocalypse.yapsody.com/ . Just £20 to be part of this fabulous and increasingly popular event, with proceeds going to charity. They’re on Facebook at ‘Otley Zombie Apocalypse’.
All the available FB links and Twitter addresses for pubs again.
